For Swiss start-up InstaSwiss, we developed a fully digital platform for hiking enthusiasts, from the initial idea to the finished web app. The aim was to create an application that not only provides inspiration, but also delivers specific, personalised hiking recommendations – with an integrated route planner, GPX download, travel information and much more. The project was implemented in collaboration with the InstaSwiss team, partner developers and numerous creators, and is now a prime example of modern, scalable web app architecture with real added value for end users.
The Instaswiss project started with a clear goal: to offer hiking enthusiasts a platform that is perfectly tailored to their needs – while also enabling creators to manage their own content entirely independently. Working closely with Instaswiss, we designed an interactive prototype in Figma, tested it early on with user groups, and continuously optimised the hiking route planner and user journey. Structured beta testing with 100 selected users provided valuable insights that were incorporated into the final UX. This formed the basis for a web app that combines technical complexity with ease of use.
Over 300 published hiking routes
At launch, 300 detailed hikes had already been created and published by various creators. Each route includes descriptions, photos, GPX data and points of interest such as restaurants, photo spots and accommodation. This shows that our CMS setup is not only well thought out, but also intuitive for external content partners to use – and is actively used.
Less than 1 second loading time per page
Performance matters – especially for web apps with complex data structures and API connections. Thanks to a well-designed technical setup and intelligent caching, all pages of the Instaswiss app run at lightning speed – even on mobile devices or with a slow connection.
1,000 pre-sales subscriptions within 24 hours
Shortly after the pre-launch, a special limited subscription offer was released – and sold out completely within a day. This momentum demonstrates the need in the market and confirms that the user guidance, messaging and subscription structure are spot on.
The app was implemented using state-of-the-art tools: the front end is based on WeWeb, the back end runs on Supabase, and Directus is used as the CMS. Hiking creators can maintain their content entirely on their own – from route descriptions and uploading GPX files to additional information such as restaurants, accommodation or photo spots along the route. The data read from the GPX file – e.g. altitude differences, distance, duration – is automatically integrated and processed. Advanced features such as a sophisticated hiking planner with complex filter logic, caching to optimise performance, and SwissTopo map integration with OpenLayers, including elevation profiles and real-time weather data (via MeteoSchweiz), make the app a technically sophisticated complete solution. A detailed journey planner for travel by car or public transport using the Swiss Open Transport API also ensures convenience – with all stops, tracks and transfer times.
The user interface has been optimised for different user personas. Registered users can add hikes to their favourites and manage their profile individually. Creators receive their own public profile where their routes are displayed collectively. A subscription model has been integrated via Stripe: only users with an active annual subscription can see all the details of a hike. All functions are clearly separated from each other, creating a clean premium flow with real added value. In addition to technical excellence, the app has been optimised for SEO from the ground up. The route detail pages are structured in such a way that they can be quickly indexed by search engines and displayed prominently – a decisive success factor for organic growth. The modular architecture enables easy further development – new features, APIs or design adjustments can be implemented at any time. This means that Instaswiss is not only functional today, but also positioned for long-term success.
